- The Open Cast Mine of Jalainur -

The awesome sight of Jalainur, where it's possible to see in view, up to twenty "SY" locos working
at any one time. The trade-off is, that in December, day time temperatures are around -20c. Dec 2006.

The morning passenger climbs out of the pit. Sometimes propelled, sometimes pulled - the sheep didn't care.

"SY" 1416, resplendent with deflectors, works around the washery. December 2006.

The passenger hauls out of the mine, heading for Nanzhan to the south. December 2006.

Day's end in the wilderness of Nanzhan, where a spoil train is silhouetted against the setting sun.

One of the most challenging locations is the spoil dump to the south; a desolate wasteland of rubble
embankments, pylons and general dereliction which becomes dramatic at the sun's going down. Dec 2006.

The bands of coal testify to the very reason for Jalainur's existence, and the frozen water falls
evidence of the harsh mid winter conditions. December 2006.

Delicacy among the dereliction of the spoil dumps in the form of reed beds, edging a frozen lake.
